NWKRTC had plans to develop bus-stands at Belgaum, Haveri, and Dharwad

Hubli, November 28
: Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain said that good connectivity was one of the prerequisites for ensuring economic growth.

He was inaugurating the 11th Foundation Day celebrations of the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) here on Tuesday.

Jain said the country’s economic growth rate had been increasing steadily. However, if benefits of growth were to reach all regions of the country it was essential that there was good connectivity. In fact, in many areas economic growth was largely dependent on good connectivity, he said.

Jain said it was essential that semi-governmental institutions such as the NWKRTC mobilise resources of their own to tread the path of success. And for that to happen, employees and officials should work together. Only coordination and team spirit would help in improving important services such as public transport, Jain said.

On the occasion, Jain along with other dignitaries presented silver medals to NWKRTC drivers for accident-free driving for five years. A total of 54 drivers were selected for the award for the year 2003.

Presenting a report on the NWKRTC, General Manager (Technical) H Baburao said that the corporation had succeeded in bringing down losses and was hopeful of gaining profit during 2008-09.

The corporation had plans to develop bus-stands at Belgaum, Haveri, and Dharwad and city bus terminals at Hubli and Dharwad at a total cost of Rs 16.6 crore.

Theatre artiste Govind Mannur said that in spite of several constraints, employees of the NWKRTC were able to deliver better services to people, which was laudable.

State unit vice-president of All-India Trade Union Congress M D Doddagoudra underscored the need for making efforts to get additional assistance from the Government for improving the NWKRTC.

Presiding over the function, Managing Director of the NWKRTC A N Patil said that steps were being taken to improve financial position of the corporation, and asked employees to join hands with the corporation in this regard.

Chief Labour and Welfare Officer S K Halli welcomed the gathering. Compensation cheques for Rs 2 lakh were given away to family members of NWKRTC employees who died during service, on the occasion.

Vayavya Labs, Belgaum gets into second phase of the competition

Top 30 start-up nominees cut across sectors, cities

Source: http://www.livemint.com/2008/11/25000115/Top-30-startup-nominees-cut-a.html

Mumbai: Agri-business, software testing, sports management, education and tele-radiology all rub shoulders in a shortlist of 30 nominees in the Tata-NEN Hottest Startup Awards conducted by the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), a not-for-profit organization that aims to nurture entrepreneurship in the country.

The 30 were chosen from a list of 588 nominees with maximum public votes and the highest expert ratings. The competition, of which Mint is an exclusive print partner, attracted 200,000 votes across all nominees and 100,000 registered users on its website (users could vote online and via text messages).

A majority of the shortlisted companies were started in the last three years and are headquartered in big cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi as well as smaller towns such as Jaipur, Patiala and Belgaum.

Delving a little deeper into what the 30 do shows that 60%, or 18 companies—based on their activities—are addressing the India market; six are aiming for the global market and six want to start in India first and then go overseas later. “This is interesting as it shows up a lot of opportunities here, which may not be as affected by the downturn if they solve real issues addressing agriculture or unemployment,” says Laura Parkin, executive director, Wadhwani Foundation and NEN.

Another key trend was that entrepreneurs who made it to the list were older and more experienced. Of the 588 nominees, only one in 10 was aged above 40 while nearly half of them were in their 20s. Of the Top 30 in the shortlist, one in four entrepreneurs was above 40. Academic qualification also shone on the shortlist; two-thirds of the entrepreneurs had postgraduate education, nine held bachelor’s degrees and one has not studied beyond high school.

Public voting on the 30 shortlisted firms will open again from 25 November. Five start-ups that garner maximum votes before 23 December will win the competition.

18,000 To Be Recruited This Fiscal @ KSRTC Belgaum Hubli

Mangalore: A driver or conductor’s job at Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is literally a phone call away. The only requirement is that the applicant should adhere to the qualifications laid down by KSRTC like should valid licence and experience. The state-owned transport operator, which is facing a huge shortage of crew, has drawn up plans to recruit 18,000 drivers/conductors in the current fiscal.

Transport minister R Ashok told The Times of India that the corporation will complete recruitments by the end of March 2009. “I have instructed my officials to expedite the process. Anybody who has the prescribed qualification can call up the local KSRTC office and stake a claim for appointment,” he said. The normal process of recruitment will take its own course of time, Ashok said in
defence of the new idea.

When asked whether the corporation was willing to absorb the employees who would be rendered jobless if it started operations on non-nationalized routes such as in Dak
shina Kannada and Udupi districts, Ashok replied in the negative. Applicants must meet the recruitment norms laid down by the corporation, Ashok maintained. “We do not want to put passenger safety in peril and hence this strict adherence to recruitment norms,” he pointed out.

A person applying for the post of driver should have completed SSLC and have a heavy passenger/transport driving licence.

Conductors should have passed their PUC and also have a conductors’ licence. Likewise, an applicant for the post of driver-cum-conductor should have both the driver and conductors’ licences and passed SSLC.
