State-of-the-art kitchen opens at Hubli railway station

HUBLI: Minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, on Saturday said the catering services of the railways is in for a major overhaul.

Speaking after inaugurating Cell Kitchen at Hubli railway station, he said a survey conducted by IRCTC revealed that over 50% of passengers were not happy with the quality of food being supplied in trains while 15.09% and 13.73% passengers were upset with bedroll and overcharging, respectively.

Muniyappa said IRCTC has taken steps by introducing hamper system in base kitchen, conducting food and hygiene audit, centralized rate contract for reputed branded quality product, signed MoU with HPCL for smooth supply of LPG and adoption of fuel-efficient practices in kitchens.

He said IRCTC is taking up the challenge of improving the quality of catering services, spreading awareness among the passengers to curb overcharging, and ensuring cleanliness in compartments, etc.

Cell kitchen

The Cell Kitchen launched in Hubli railway station is the first state-of-the-art kitchen in South Western Railway zone and 20th in Indian Railways. Built at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, the kitchen has modern equipment like steam cooking, cold storage room, dish washing system, etc.

The food prepared in Cell Kitchen will be supplied to pantry cars and stalls. Cell Kitchen is mandated to provide quality coffee, tea, breakfast, meals at regulated prices.

Hubli railway station to sport new look

HUBLI: Come December, the Hubli railway station will wear a new look with the completion of works on the new station building. Food plaza, subways, VIP lounge, escalators, spacious AC waiting rooms, etc, will add to the exiting facilities.

There will be separate and wide exit and entry points. The new building that will come up on an area of 8,000 sqmt will have bus parking facility at the subway level. There will be separate parking lots for two- and four-wheelers.

The new building will be a sort of a monument, considering the materials that would be used in its construction, South Western Railway's Hubli divisional railway manager Adesh Sharma told reporters on Thursday.

He said the work on the new building, that will cost Rs 14 crore, has already started. As many as 148 railway quarters located close to the existing station will make way for the new building. About 90 quarters have already been vacated.

Sharma said the platforms will be increased from four to six once the new building is in place. Platform ticket-vending machines will come up in 3-4 months.

Belgaum railway station to get a face off

The Belgaum Railway Station will get a beautiful face off in year’s time. Some of the work has already begun and the main work of the main building will commence shortly.


The new plan has a sub way for commuters, new foot over bridge, food court, multi storied parking and resting places.


The plan of the station has been done by a Belgaumite, Mr.Mohan Bidikar.


Rs.3 crores 67 lakhs have be allotted for the construction of the new building.
