A Legislature Committee headed by Speaker Jagadish Shettar has identified a site near Halaga Bastawad near Belgaum to construct the proposed Suvarna Soudha.

Disclosing this to reporters on Thursday, Shettar said the site near Halaga Bastawad off NH-4 is ideal location in all aspects, including safety and connectivity.

Farmers in the area too have agreed to hand over their land for the purpose, he stated.

The previous JD(S)-led coalition government had decided to construct Suvarna Soudha at a place called Vaccine Depot, in the central part of Belgaum city. A foundation stone was also laid for the project. But it ran into rough weather with a section of people in Belgaum opposing the location.

The Speaker said as Vaccine Depot is located in the heart of the city, construction of Suvarna Soudha will lead to congestion. People in and around the area the depot would have been badly affected by this project. Hence, a new place has been identified on the city outskirts, he pointed out.

Legislative Council Chairman Veeranna Mattikatti, who is also a member of the committee, said a plot near Kanakaratti has also been identified as the second option. “If in case we bump into any problem in Halaga Bastawad, we can go to Kanakaratti,” he added.
