DHARWAD: R. Gopal, director of Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, has said that a Rs. 2 crore-project had been chalked out for the restoration of Kittur palace, court and museum, and the work would begin soon.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day national seminar on “Kittur Samsthana”, organised jointly by the Kannada Study Institute of Karnatak University and Directorate of Archaeology and Museums here on Wednesday.
Dr. Gopal said that the directorate would organise district and university-level seminars for creating awareness among the youth on history. So far, such seminars had been organised in 11 districts of the State during which souvenirs on the important historical incidents of the respective districts had been released, he said.
He said the directorate would also organise competitions on historical subjects and it would also extending financial assistance to various organisations for conducting programmes on history.
On the occasion, former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University M.I. Savadatti inaugurated the exhibition of documents related to Kittur rulers. The event was organised by the State Gazetteer Department.
Usha Suresh, director of the State Gazetteer Department, released the book “Swatantrya Sangramada Dhruvatare Chennamma”, written by Deputy Director of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Sulochana Potnis. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Usha said that the department would shortly take up the work of collecting historical documents related to Karnataka, which was available in the museum in London.Collection drive An awareness campaign aimed at collecting documents related to Queen of Kittur Rani Chennamma, which might be available in Kittur and surrounding places, would begin shortly, she said.

As many as 83 scholars presented papers on various issues related to Kittur rulers and Queen Chennamma.
