3G services launched in Belgaum

BELGAUM: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) launched 3G services here on Saturday. MP Suresh Angadi did the honours by making the first call to K V V Satyanarayan, general manager of Belgaum telecom district.

Lauding the achievements of BSNL in the last 15 years, Angadi described how well it competed with the private telecom companies.

Spreaking on the revolution in the telecom sector, Angadi said technology can help children in remote areas gain access to education. The MP promised funds for the construction of a conference hall on the premises of the telecom office.

Explaining the features of 3G services, Satyanarayan said it is an updated version after 2G and 2.5G. "With this, we can have a download speed of up to 3.6 mbps, high-speed broadband, faster video and music download, and video conferencing, mobile TV and online gaming," he added.

Initially, the facility will be offered in Belgaum, Gokak and Chikkodi taluks in the district. There are 220 towers providing regular services to 2.2 lakh consumers in the city. Seventy more towers will be installed in the district, the GM added.
