Belagum Zilla Panchayat gets national award for its "outstanding performance" in implementing NREGS

BELGAUM: The Belgaum Zilla Panchayat has been selected for the national award for its "outstanding performance" in implementing National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

ZP CEO Ekroop Kaur will receive the award from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at New Delhi on February 2.

Belgaum is one among the 24 districts from across the country selected for the award. The district has registered 5.36 lakh families under the scheme and distributed 5.35 lakh job cards among them. As many as Rs 168.609 crore has been spent till January 23.

According to Kaur, the other achievements of the ZP include planting 10 lakh saplings across the district in a single day and registering around four lakh families in the just three months - between October and December 2008 - for the scheme.
