Belgaum: Minister for Youth Services and Sports Gulihatti D. Shekhar handed over a cheque for Rs. 3 crore towards construction of a synthetic track in the district stadium here on Monday.
However, the Minister parried questions on why the Government was spending such a huge amount on a leased property instead of investing same money to build a new stadium.
The Minister said the lease term would expire only after 10 years from now and the track could be used at the site till then.
Report to be sought Mr. Shekhar said he would seek a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner on the details of the property on which the stadium was constructed.
It is said that the land in question belonged to the KLE Society and had been leased to the Government for 50 years.
